Sounds of Arabia Festival Begins in Capital Today

ABU DHABI — The Cultural Foundation in the capital will host top Arab singers at the second ‘Sounds of Arabia’ Festival from May 2 to 9. The festival is being organised by the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage.

After the WOMAD festival last week, the authority is continuing its seasonal activities with this top-flight programme that sheds light on the important aspects of the golden age of inherent Arabic music.

“The festival seeks to maintain our Arabian identity and specificity, in addition to reviving the spirit of Arabic and Eastern music, rhythm and inherent Arabic singing,” Abdulla Al Amri, Director of Culture and Arts Department at the authority, said at a press conference on Thursday.

“Not only we are trying to present a series of artistic evening celebrations through the festival, we also seek to discuss the important aspects of music through a series of seminars held by great musicians and professionals who have had a major role in preserving the Arabic music heritage.”

The strategy also includes the organisation of a ceremony on the last Thursday of each month, which contributes to the protection of this unique heritage and passing it onto the new generations. This year, ‘Sounds of Arabia’ will have a diverse mix of various schools of Arabic music. It will feature eight singers, a band and a symphony orchestra, from the Arabian Gulf and the Levant to Egypt and the Maghreb.

Ammar Al Sharei, Egyptian musician, author and music critic, said, “I came to Abu Dhabi for the first time in 1971 and found this city is a reflection of Arabian heritage.” Ratiba Al Hefni, Head of Arabic Music Foundation in Egypt, said, “It is great to have this festival. Arabic classical music embodies our heritage and we must protect and preserve it.”
