Waterbus Fares to be Revised as RTA Mulls Longer Routes

DUBAI - Waterbuses plying along the Dubai creek could soon see a fare overhaul with the Marine Agency at the RTA studying options aimed at making the service more popular among the masses, a top Agency official told Khaleej Times on Sunday.

Mohammed Obeid Al Mulla, the CEO of the Marine Agency said the existing fare structure of the water bus and the routes was being reviewed to make the services more commuter-friendly.

The fare for a single trip at present stands at four Dirhams which has been a cause of worry for commuters who have cheaper transport options in the form of the ‘abra’.

“We want to make the service even more popular among the masses. At present, we are concentrating on getting a public opinion, suggestions and complaints about the service and improvement options.”

An official said they are planning to run the buses routes longer than at present. The waterbus service was launched by the RTA in August 2007, initially with two buses transporting passengers across the Dubai creek.

Later, the waterbus operations on five lines namely B1: From Sabkha
Station to Bur Dubai Station, B3: From Al-Seef Station to Sabkha Station
via Bani Yas Station, B2: From Bani Yas Station to Dubai Old Souk, B4: From Dubai Old Souk to Sabkha Station, designated as overnight service ensuring 24 hour service, and B5: a tourist line from Al-Shindaga Station to Al-Seef Station and vice versa.

The official said that last year,
more than 300,000 passengers used the waterbus service adding that
the service intended to target 10 per cent of the abra users. “It is a successful endeavour. And the study will identify ways in which the service can be improved,” he said.

At present, there are 10 waterbuses operating at the creek. The second phase of the project intends to start 14 more waterbuses. Third phase of the project will see operation of waterbuses of new design.
