Transparency of Awards Hailed

THE nominees for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (IPAF) have hailed the transparency and objectivity in choosing the winner.

Speaking during the ceremony to present the award on Monday, they pointed out that the prize has gained an important position in the Arab World in a short span of two editions.

Egyptian novelist Dr Yousef Ziedan with his work Beelzebub won the first prize from among six shortlisted by the judges panel.

The short listed works included Tunisian-born Habib Selemi’s novel The Scents of Mari-Claire. In his novel, Selemi tells the readers about the relationship between an Arab man and a French woman in Paris.

Inaam Kachachi, Iraqi writer and journalist’s novel The American Granddaughter is the story of a young American of Iraqi origin who has left her country as an adolescent and returns to it as a translator with the US occupation forces.

Thirdly, Ibrahim Nassarallah, who wrote The Time of White Horses as the Jordanian tried to document the story of three generations of Palestinian families in a village.

Syrian author, Fawaz Haddad who wrote The Unfaithful Translator, used translation as a metaphor for all arts.

Egyptian writer, Mohammad Al Bisati’s novel The Hunger (Jua), describes hunger is not only related to food, but also to thinking. He focused on the social nightmare in which his characters live.
