TransAD to Build Three Villages to House Cabbies

ABU DHABI - TransAD, operator of the taxi fleet in Abu Dhabi, will build three villages to house all taxi drivers in the emirate. The first village will be established in Abu Dhabi, followed by Al Ain and Al Gharbia. This is the first-of-its-kind project in the world, Abdulla Sultan Al Sabbagh, general manager of TransAD, claimed recently.

The villages will consist of residences for the drivers of all taxi companies operating in the emirate and separate parking lots for their taxis. They will have all facilities like hospitals and pharmacies, drivers’ training centres, supermarkets, entertainment and sports fields. TransAD (Centre for Regulation of Transport by Hire Cars), a division of the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport, will start construction of the villages from next year, while work on the design and other necessary specification will begin next month.

Speaking on Wednesday, Al Sabbagh, said, “If we want to seek quality services from the drivers, we have to provide quality facilities to them. So, we have decided on the construction of the mega project for the taxi drivers.”

The location of the TransAD village in the city is yet to be finalised.

“Our plans are now in the preliminary stage. But we are sure it would come up in Musaffah in Abu Dhabi,” Al Sabbagh said.

When asked how many drivers will be accommodated in a village and will the accommodation be free, Al Sabbagh said, “In the current driver’s contract, the company has to provide accommodation, so that might be the case.”

“These villages are supposed to be the home for all taxis and their drivers in the emirate,” Al Sabbagh said.

“We expect that in the coming days, the taxi drivers’ recruitments will be tougher than now as we will require standard qualities in them. We are also coordinating with global recruitment agencies in this regard,” Al Sabbagh said. The training centres at the villages will also impart lessons in Arabic and English language proficiency so that the drivers can deal with passengers better.
