Timetable for Trams and Trains in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI - Metro trains will start operations in the capital by 2016, a top official at the Department of Transport in Abu Dhabi said on Monday.

Abdullah Rashid Al Otaiba, the department’s chairman, also said trams would be running along the capital’s streets by 2014.

Last week, the emirate had issued tenders for the engineering and design study for the 131-kilometre metro project, to link Abu Dhabi with its suburban communities like Al Raha Beach development and Mussaffah, Al Otaiba said.

The study will be completed in 18 months and tenders will be awarded by June this year.

The official, however, did not elaborate on the amount of investment to be made on the two projects, or on the tram routes.

Al Otaiba said that the projects would be launched on the model of public private partnership, which has become a hallmark of Abu Dhabi.

The public transport system master plan will be made public in April, and elaborate on the details of routes, involvement of private sector and other technical aspects.

Al Otaiba said that the tram system will be launched in phases and will cover the whole emirate.

Asked about the need for a system linking the 200 islands in Abu Dhabi, he said that government gave top priority to the transport system, since it has long-term benefits for the economy as it generates sustainable revenues.

Sea transport would be key pillar to the transport strategy and the master plan will shed light on gthe government’s vision and targets, the official said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Transport on Monday signed the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Charter on Sustainable Development during the UITP Middle East North Africa Assembly meeting in Abu Dhabi.

Addressing the Assembly, Al Otaiba said that the Government of Abu Dhabi and its Department of Transport recognised the importance of sustainable development for national growth.

The department’s strategy, which was launched in May last year, takes into account a number of steps towards ensuring that sustainable development remains key.
