Indians Flay Passport Services Centre at Sharjah Empost

SHARJAH - The one-month-old Indian Passport and Visa Services Centre (IPAVSC) in Sharjah has drawn flak from many Indians who seek new passports or to renew the expiring ones.

Currently, the centre at the Empost office on Al Wahda Road is the only one accepting applications from Indians living in Sharjah after the nationwide service was outsourced to Empost in February to avoid overcrowding on the premises of Indian diplomatic missions. Prior to that, Sharjah applicants used to depend on the Indian Association Sharjah (IAS) or go directly to the Indian Consulate in Dubai to submit their applications.

Applicants waiting at the Sharjah IPAVSC on Tuesday they were “unhappy and dissatisfied” with the services offered.

Some of them said the lack of a token dispenser forced them to reach the centre as early as 4am to queue up for receiving a token at 7am. Since only 100 tokens are given a day, many have to visit the centre several times to be lucky.

“It took 20 minutes for me to get through their call centre’s line to ask for the Sharjah centre’s location. But only when I came here on Monday, I was told I have to come early in the morning to take a token. I got token No. 51 today, but they are still serving the person with token No. 35 now (at 11.30am). I don’t know how long I will have to wait,” said R. P. Chaudhry.

Applicants also complained about delay in processing applications, lack of typing services attached to the centre, the cramped waiting area and difficulty in reaching the place due to road constructions in the area. When contacted, CEO of Empost Sultan Al Midfa said the token dispenser at the Sharjah centre would be ready in a few days as the supplier has to import stocks from overseas. “We sincerely regret these inconveniences experienced by some of our valuable customers and assure that these will be rectified at the earliest.” He said there had been some misconceptions on the scope of work that Empost can do.

“We wish to clarify that our service is primarily a drop-off and pick-up centre for applications. We are not involved in the approval process, as only the
Indian diplomatic missions have the authority for processing and approving the applications.”
