Feeder Buses to Connect with Stations

DUBAI - Areas in the city without a Metro station will have buses providing connectivity to a nearby station, Roads and Transport Authority officials said on Sunday.

Peyman Younes Perham, the Director of Marketing and Corporate Communications Department, said that the authorities were developing a feeder system which will ensure integrated transport across the emirate.

“A total of 700 buses will be deployed. These buses will connect areas without a Metro station with one providing the people with access to the Metro stations,” the official said. For example, the Mirdiff area will be connected to the Rashidiya Metro stations via these buses. People wishing to ride a Metro can just walk to any bus stop in the area and catch a bus to the Metro station.

The official said that a number of air-conditioned bus stop were being set up in all areas of the emirate.

“People living in any area will have to walk a mere 500m to reach an air-conditioned bus stop,” Perham said.

With only 6 per cent of residents making use of the public transport system at present, the aim is to raise this by 30 per cent by 2020, he said. “With the increase in traffic, we needed to have 12 lanes to and from Dubai to Abu Dhabi if the Metro was not there,” Perham said.

Meanwhile, Ramadan Abdulla Mohammed, the Director of Operations Department, at the Rail Agency said the studies on ticketing system and the unified card project was on and would be finalised in a couple of months time.
