‘Authority Will Take Action in Transport, Relocation Matters Too’

DUBAI - Transportation fee increases, if provided by the school, will fall within the limits of the tuition fee cap announced by the emirate’s education authorities. However education authorities said they would not tolerate any ‘arm-twisting’ tactics by the schools, which force parents to meet the exorbitant increases.

The Knowledge and Human Development Authority said bus fees would be limited by the tuition fee cap, unlike the last two academic years when schools were allowed to set their own transportation fees as the service is an optional service provided by the school.

“If it (transport) is provided by the school, then this regulation will apply. However, if it is being provided by a third party or being outsourced, it (increase) is open to market factors,” said Mohammed Darwish, chief of Licensing and Operations at Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), which regulates schools in Dubai. Authorities maintained that if there were any signs of schools trying to force parents, the KHDA would intervene and prevent schools from abusing the system.

Meanwhile, parents of students studying at the Our Own English High School, Sharjah, plan to meet today at a beach resort to discuss measures to tackle the transportation hike.

The school, managed by Gems, recently announced an increase from its existing Dh120 to Dh250 fee to an amount ranging from Dh250 to Dh330.
