4 in 10 Expats Plan on ‘Leaving Next Year’

DUBAI - Four out of ten expatriates in the UAE say they are considering leaving the country in the next year, a survey has found.

Almost a fifth of respondents feel they are likely to lose their jobs over the next 12 months and eight per cent said that they were already unemployed.

Dan Healey, CEO of Real Opinions, the research company which conducted the survey, said that the recent Dh36 billion bond issue by the federal government could restore job security.

“But there still exist some serious challenges,” he said.“Expatriates appear to be using this as a time to evaluate their options rather than leave their fate to the decision of others,” Healey added.

In addition, the survey found that 75 per cent of respondents are dissatisfied with the cost of living in the Emirates, and 45 per cent say they are “very dissatisfied”.

“Job insecurity is one side of the story for expatriates, the other is the cost of living,” said Healey, when discussing reasons why expatriates are considering leaving. “The largest share of wallet expense for many is accommodation and 62 per cent are dissatisfied with this,” he added.

In addition the survey found that 77 per cent of expatriates with children are dissatisfied with the standard of education relative to the cost.

Some 34 per cent of expatriates say they are considering starting their own business over the next year. Healey said that the government has a role to play in the cost of setting up a company.

Compared to other countries expatriates could also live in, the UAE was considered better by 58 per cent of respondents. Healey said that the figure supported the 4 out of 10 ratio for those looking to leave.

The survey was carried out between February 11 — 18 and involved 500 expatriates working across all areas of the UAE. Fifty-nine per cent of the respondents included expats living in Dubai, of which 44 per cent were Asians.
