Snow Melting Slowly in RAK Mountains

RAS AL KHAIMAH -Ravindra Nath The snow that settled down on Ras Al Khaimah mountains on Friday was melting slowly on Sunday, but the cold spell continued in the mountains and surrounding areas.

Many residents were surprised at the rare spectacle of snow-capped mountains. The entire area was covered with dazzling, white snow for the second time in the history of Ras Al Khaimah after 2004.

Rashed Mohammed, an Emirati living near the Al Jais mountains, said except for occasional hailstorms, locally known as barad, snowfall is not common in the mountains. He noted that on Friday night, it snowed more heavily than in 2004 when it lasted only for a few moments. This time, the entire mountaintop was covered under about 10cm of snow.

“I am surprised at the changes in the emirate’s weather conditions. Besides the snowfall, the cold spell has been longer this time.

“In the coming years, it might even snow in the areas surrounding the mountains,” he said.

Thirty-year-old Hassan Majid, Emirati resident of Khozam area, was upbeat about the snowfall and said nature unravels in strange ways.

Some desert areas of Ras Al Khaimah might also get snowfall during the winter season in the future.

“Who thought that a couple of days’ inclement weather, ending with low temperatures, would result in snow capping the mountain? The snowfall predicts more changes in the country’s weather conditions in the coming years,” he added.

An observer at the RAK Airport Meteorological Office said the snowfall was a result of the scattered rains in Ras Al Khaimah that brought the temperature down.

“The rain along with the cold easterly winds and low-lying clouds could have brought the temperatures further down in the mountains,” he said.

A senior official from the RAK government said plans are under way to build a resort in Al Jais mountains for the visitors and tourists after the completion of the road to these mountains.

Rakeen, a government real estate developer, will develop the project.
