Ras Al Khaimah Restricts Quad Bikes

RAS AL KHAIMAH - Riding of quad bikes (four-wheel sand buggies) has been prohibited in the streets of Ras Al Khaimah and in tourism zones.

Quad bikes will only be allowed in the Awafi desert area, according to a statement from the Ras Al Khaimah Traffic and Licensing Department on Tuesday.

The ban was introduced in the wake of an increasing number of accidents involving quad bikers.

Brigadier Mohammed Al Nubi, Deputy Director-General of Police, said special patrol teams have been set up to nab quad bikers, who defy the ban.

He noted that quad bikes found being used in the prohibited areas in the emirate9, will be impounded.

Al Nubi also urged parents to instruct their children to abide by the traffic laws and to stop them from riding quad bikes or sport bikes on the main roads for their own as well as that of other road users’ safety.

Noordin Ahmed, a resident of Khozam area hailed the decision stressing that the quad bikes had become a nuisance as they posed a risk to the lives of youngsters and other road users.

“I am happy with the decision to ban quad bikers from the streets as this would help protect their lives. Many of these bikers, especially youngsters, have ended up in accidents resulting in deaths or permanent disabilities,” said Ahmed.

Another resident, Usamah, said some parents were reluctant to talk to their children about the dangers of riding quad bikes on the busy roads.
