Rains Flood Roads Across Country

DUBAI - Heavy rains, intermittent in some places, lashed various parts of the country overnight, flooding roads and causing traffic snarls and minor accidents.

The rain that started late Wednesday night in Dubai and Sharjah continued till early Thursday.

Office-goers and school children had to wade through flooded streets and battle a downpour in Sharjah and Dubai early morning on Thursday, while several cars broke down in the middle of the roads.

Ameer Al Shaer, an engineer with a construction company in Al Quoz, Dubai, said some sections of roads were under pools of water and vehicles got stuck in some spots, particularly near the Grand Mall.

Complaining that the municipality tankers were late to come and pump out accumulated water, Mohammed Said, a salesman with a trading establishment, said he had an accident on Wednesday night due to a flooded road. “My vehicle got stuck in a muddy gutter and suddenly a car hit my car from behind.”

Ghareeb Al Mulla, a motorist in Dubai, said, “It has become a nightmare. Why does it take a long time for the pools of water to be drained? My car’s axle broke after it fell in a gutter covered by water.”

Rain lashed towns and villages for the third day in a row, flooding the valleys and major roads in the mountainous areas in Fujairah and Khor Fakkan. Fujairah, Khor Fakkan, Kalbaa, Dibba Fujairah and the surrounding areas also witnessed heavy rain overnight. More rains are expected in those areas.

Rain, wind and hailstorms continued in Umm Al Quwain from midnight to Thursday morning. The rains were also accompanied by lightning and thunder.
