Philippines Issues Advisory for Expats on Tourist Visas

DUBAI - Filipinos intending to travel to the UAE on tourist visas are urged not to travel to Kish Island and other border points once their visa expires, according to a Philippine government travel advisory issued last Friday.

The advisory, recommended by Philippine Consul-General in Dubai Benito B. Valeriano, was approved by the Philippine government through the Office of Undersecretary for Migrant Workers Affairs (OUMWA).

The travel advisory said it is not advisable for the Filipinos to exit to Kish, Iran, and other exit points to Oman because at present, Filipinos there find it extremely difficult to obtain new visas for re-entry into the UAE, resulting in their being stranded there well beyond their intended period of stay incurring excessive expenses.

“While this situation persists,” it said, “Filipinos with tourist visas in the UAE are now being enjoined to go home once their visas expire, and to apply for new visas in the Philippines if they wish to go back to the UAE.”

Valeriano said the advisory will enable Filipinos travelling to the emirates to think seriously before going for visa runs.

The advisory comes in the midst of reports from Kish that the number of visa changers stranded there had doubled, and that most of them, who wanted to cancel their previous applications, found their agents’ offices in the UAE closed down or their licences cancelled.
