Now, Dubai-Sharjah Taxis Too will Start at Dh20

DUBAI — Taxis heading from Dubai to Sharjah will charge a minimum fare of Dh20 from the middle of this month, a senior RTA official on Wednesday.

Issa Al Dossari, CEO of the Public Transport Agency in the RTA, said all the necessary arrangements were being made for the implementation of the new tariff.

“Taxis in Dubai will charge a minimum fare of Dh20 when going to Sharjah from mid-January. At the moment, the necessary preparations are in progress. There is a lot of work involved as the taxi meters need to be modified,” Dossari said.

One of the taxi drivers in Dubai called it a good move.

“The number of refusals will decrease once this rule comes into effect. It is good for us as we will not have to worry about meeting the target while going towards Sharjah,” said a driver of Dubai Taxi.

In October, the Sharjah Transport had introduced the minimum fare of Dh20 with the aim of reducing the number of complaints they were getting from people who had to wait for hours to get a taxi to travel to Dubai.

While the taxi drivers in Sharjah are reluctant to carry passengers to Dubai, citing loss of time, the taxi drivers in Dubai are faced with the same problem. The drivers’ reluctance gave rise to complaints and even arguments and heated exchanges between drivers and commuters.

Earlier, many taxi franchisee companies belonging to the Sharjah Public Transport Corporation (SPTC) said that they were still assessing the situation after the implementation.

They added that there has been a shift in the customer base.

Abdullah Sultan Al Sabbagh, Director-General of Cars Taxi, said, “Definitely there has been a shift in the customer base, but it is too early to assess the impact it has on us. According to an initial feedback, we feel that people have switched over to using buses since the new fare system was introduced.”
