New Roads Soon for Trucks in Sharjah

SHARJAH - Trucks and heavy vehicles from eastern and western areas of the country will not be allowed to enter the roads in Sharjah’s city limits when a road dedicated to them would be opened next month in Al Dhaid area.

This new road is being opened to reduce traffic congestion in Sharjah, Shaikh Khaled bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Director-General of Sharjah Public Works, said on Thursday.

Heavy vehicles weighing 2.5 tonnes or more will not be allowed to ply in the city.

“All trucks and heavy vehicles will be diverted to the new road once it is opened. By this, we aim to minimise the traffic rush, especially on Emirates Road and Sharjah-Al Dhaid Road,” the top official said.

The 8-km-long road will cost Dh80 million. Now, 95 per cent of the road has been completed and will open for traffic in the next few weeks.

Shaikh Khaled said this is one of the most vital projects being carried out by the government of Sharjah to solve the traffic problems and expand the road network.

The road is being constructed under the instructions of His Highness Shaikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah. Trucks coming from the western area towards Sharjah through Masafi and Al Dhaid will be diverted. In addition, trucks travelling from other directions on their way to the western area passing through Al Dhaid Road will also be diverted towards the new road.

“The road starts from Al Suhaila Roundabout and connects the Al Dhaid-Madam Road passing through Al Dhaid City Centre area,” said Shaikh Khaled.

A traffic police officer said the ban on heavy trucks plying on Sharjah roads during the peak hours has not worked well. The change of timing for truck drivers has not worked as many of them flouted it despite the tough penalties, the official said. This new road will not only reduce traffic jams on Sharjah roads, but will also reduce the burden of monitoring the roads on the police.

Motorists in Sharjah welcomed the move. Musharaff Al Mahdi said he was happy that the scaring heavy trucks will disappear from the roads in city limits.

“Traffic on Emirates Road near National Paints Roundabout has never been controlled. Trucks block the road completely,” he said.

Ali Wahab, another motorist, said, “I appreciate the decision to construct an exclusive road for trucks and other heavy vehicles, which cause congestion for hours on the roads in the city.”
