Motorists Told to Use Low Beam During Fog

DUBAI — Driving vehicles with lights at high beam during foggy conditions, irrespective of the time of the day, will invite a fine of Dh200 and four black points against the driving licence, warned the traffic authorities in Dubai.

While urging motorists to use low beam and avoid hazard lights during foggy conditions, Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, the Deputy Director of the General Department of Traffic said drivers need to take extra precautions.

“Motorists should reduce speed, use low beam lights and always be on a high alert. Drivers should leave enough distance between vehicles, comply with lane discipline and avoid using hazard lights unless it is an emergency. The wrong use of the hazard lights is a major cause of confusion leading to mishaps,” Col Saif said.

The officer also called upon drivers to make sure that the window glass and vehicle lights are clean.

“People should avoid driving early in the morning. They should move out only in case of an emergency and be very careful on the roads,” he said.

He added that 5 per cent of the total number of traffic accidents took place due to fog and rains this year.

Meanwhile, nearly 40 minor accidents were recorded on Thursday, the official said. The foggy condition on Wednesday saw one tanker driver sustaining serious injuries on Al Qoudra Road. The officer said the driver was driving recklessly and the vehicle skidded off the road and then overturned.
Two of his companions were injured.

The New Year’s eve also saw the police arrest a few people for driving under the influence of liquor.

The police however said no fights or untoward incidents were recorded.

On Thursday morning, an Asian driver was killed in a road mishap in the Jebel Ali area. The incident took place at around 6am. Also, three people sustained minor injuries in a collision between two cars on Al Aweer road on Thursday. This incident also took place at around 6am.
