Liwa Festival Draws Big Crowds on Opening Day

ABU DHABI - More than 5,000 visitors from all over the world witnessed, on Sunday, the inauguration of the five-day Liwa Festival 2009.

A total of 770 competitors have registered to take part in camel and horse races and falconry at the festival.

The annual Liwa Festival is held under the patronage of Minister of Presidential Affairs Shaikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The festival will conclude on January 30.

The first day of the festival, which included the most famous camel race, was covered by the Western media.

“The festival will include horse race and falcon race in addition to Moraeb Dune cars and motorbikes championship,” said Abdullah Butti Al Qubaisi, Director of Abu Dhabi Car and Motorcycle Club.

“Some 200 competitors will take part in the camel races, while 50 racers will participate in horse racing”, Al Qubisi added.

Meanwhile, 300 falconers will participate in the competitions of falcons. Around 30,000 sq. metres of land has been set aside for the festival along with a number of camps for entertainment, restaurants and coffee shops.
