Fog Hits Flight Schedules

ABU DHABI/SHARJAH/DUBAI — Several flights were cancelled and many delayed as thick fog engulfed the country on Thursday, reducing visibility to a minimum.

At the Abu Dhabi International Airport, flights remained suspended due to fog from 6.36am until 10.47 am. As many as 18 flights were affected, of which six flights were cancelled and 12 diverted. The spokesperson of the Abu Dhabi International Airport said that with visibility dropping to 150 metres, the airport had to suspend its operations for more than three hours.

Thomas Clerk, Spokesperson of Etihad Airways said that six flights to Amman, Damascus, Muscat, Doha, Bahrain and Kuwait were delayed on Thursday.

At the Sharjah International Airport, more than 200 passengers of a flight were stranded and chaos prevailed as several other flights were cancelled.

An Air India Express flight from Calicut which was scheduled to land in Sharjah at 12.35am on January 1 finally landed at 3.45pm after the flight took detours to Dubai and Muscat.

Mohini Singh, Airport Manager, Air India Express at the Sharjah International Airport, said, “The flight was scheduled to land at the Sharjah International Airport at 12.35am on January 1. Due to the severe fog the flight was routed towards Dubai and due to some technical problems the flight had to be diverted to Muscat.”

“The same aircraft that was supposed to depart Sharjah for Kozhikode was also delayed leaving 148 of our passengers along with three infants stuck in transit for several hours.”

Officials said all the passengers were accommodated in a hotel.

Several other flights including the Air Arabia flights G9332 flight to Amman and G9510 to Colombo were cancelled.

Air Arabia flight number G9404 to Mumbai was also delayed for many hours leaving several passengers distraught. A passenger who was trying to buy ticket to Almaty from the Air Arabia ticket sales counter said, “My flight was supposed to have taken off four hours ago, but I am still stuck here. I tried to cancel my tickets and book it for the next day, but because of the rush at the ticket sales I have been waiting for over half an hour.”
