The awards under the initiative of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), were given away by Shaikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Crown Prince of Dubai on Wednesday.

Dubai Police scooped the award for its initiative to commute 25 per cent of its employees by public buses. The aim of the awards is to urge both the public and private sectors to contribute to easing traffic congestions and preserving the environment.

In Transport Safety Category, Emirates Transport Foundation bagged the first position in recognition of its initiative to launch “Safety of Student Transport” Campaign to boost traffic awareness among students, guardians and drivers.

In the Conserving the Environment Category, S. S. Lootah Co. was the winner in recognition of its initiative to use eco-friendly vehicles fitted with natural gas-powered engines and hybrid vehicles.

Speaking on the occasion, Mattar Al Tayer, the Chairman of the RTA said that the award came in implementation of the Dubai Strategic Plan and the Strategic Goals of the RTA in conserving the environment and natural wealth as well as improving the public safety.

“The Award seeks to encourage individuals and organisations to play a proactive role in support of RTA’s objectives to generalise the constructive experiments and practices which contribute to an effective and sustained transport system,” said Al Tayer.

In the field of public transport, all public transport buses procured by the RTA has been fitted with environment-friendly engines conforming to the highest environmental standards applicable in Europe (Euro 4), the official said.

He also talked about the recently launched car pooling service (Sharekni) and the ‘Awselni’ Programme which aims to provide dedicated vehicles to pick up employees from their residences to their workplaces and vice versa

Al Tayer called upon all public and private sector organisations to commence preparations for participation in the forthcoming round of DAST.
