Eco-Friendly Waste Disposal in Capital

ABU DHABI - The continuous growth of population in the past several years and the years to come has triggered one of the biggest urban environmental concerns – waste management, according to Abu Dhabi Department of Municipal Affairs (DMA).

“We are adopting the best practical eco-friendly technologies, especially in our waste management projects, for which we are building advanced infrastructure,” said Ahmed Shareef, DMA undersecretary.

In an interview, he revealed the new environmentally-friendly policies that now govern
the three municipalities in Abu Dhabi, the Eastern Region (Al Ain) and
Al Gharbia.

“Since the population is growing
so fast, the government is keen on creating the right environment for people,” stated Shareef. Following international patterns, the government is ready
to decentralise municipal services, even as it may not be the most cost-effective move. “The government’s policy now is to outsource and privatise services, so we’ve made several partnerships with third parties, one of these being the Solid Waste Management Centre,
established along with the Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi,” revealed Shareef.

The centre collects, sorts out and recycles solid waste, but, according
to the DMA undersecretary, this is
not enough. “We need to have more integrated projects between the
centre and us, including educational programmes on waste management that will teach people how to handle waste and facilitate waste segregation at source. Ideally, we would like to achieve zero-waste situation,” declared Shareef.

Creating purely recyclable and fully biodegradable waste may seem a
distant dream, but DMA is taking it
seriously.

According to Dr Taghreed Al Habshi Al Hashimi, senior waste management engineer at DMA, until now, the department did not even have a proper facility for getting rid of waste, which was all dumped in an open site.

“We had no facilities for recycling or sorting waste out so all types of waste, including hazardous waste, was dumped together, which resulted into groundwater pollution,” explained Dr Al Hashimi.

For the past three years, DMA has been working at changing this situation. As a result, several new projects have now taken shape. Four lots of five-year service contract for street cleaning, collection and transportation of municipal solid waste have been given to various national and international companies at the cost of more than Dh 600 million.

“One of these projects includes building of a new landfill and waste disposal system, which is in the design stage, but construction should be over by the end of 2009,” revealed Dr Al Hashimi.
