Drivers Get Month Deadline to Furnish Licence Details

DUBAI - Car owners in Dubai have been given a deadline of one month to provide the Traffic Police department with full details of the drivers licence at the time of committing a traffic offence so as to list the black points or face seizure of their vehicles.

“The traffic department will send an SMS through mobile or fax to the car owners informing them on the nature of the offence. They should then forward details of the person who was driving the vehicle at the time of the offence, in order to record black points against his/her driving licence,” said the Director of the traffic Department Brigadier Mohamed Saif Al Zaffin.

Al Zaffin said the black points system has been implemented to cut down on the rampant traffic offences and deaths on the roads in Dubai.

The maximum number of black points a motorist can incur in a year is 24. Once a person collects 24 black points, the licence will be suspended for three months. If a motorist accumulates 24 points for the second time, the licence will be suspended for six months.

If it happens for the third time, the license will be confiscated for one year and will only be returned when the driver passes a training course from an institute authorised by the traffic department.
