Bridging the Gap to Ensure Smooth Traffic

DUBAI - February 2008 saw the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announcing the Dh3 billion Shaikh Rashid bin Saeed Crossing project.

Said to be the longest arched bridge in the world, this will become the 6th crossing across the Dubai Creek linking Al Jaddaf at Bur Dubai with the road separating The Lagoons and Dubai Festival City. The project will take four years to complete.  The Crossing also provides entry and exit points for the Creek Island on which Opera Building, a project of Sama Dubai, will come up. It comprises 12 lanes, six in each direction.  On November 16, 2008, RTA announced ‘Smile Dubai’, a new 12-lane bridge with an inverted metal arch, set to be the 7th crossing across the creek.

The bridge, to cost Dh810 million, will be located near Dubai Creek Park, Wonderland Park and Dubai Courts in Bur Dubai, and Deira City Centre and Dubai Golf Club in Deira.

In March 2008, the new and improved Garhoud Bridge was opened to traffic giving motorists a much-needed relief. By opening the new Garhoud Bridge, the number of lanes crossing Dubai Creek went up from 19 to 48.

With the Dh15.5 billion Dubai Metro set to start its operations from September next year, the year saw the beginning of the Metro trail runs. With the first set of Metro trains arriving from Japan, the trial runs started after some shorter run across an 11-km track laid down between the Ibn Battuta Station and the Jebel Ali depot.

Till late, the RTA has received 30 trains out of 44, which will run along the Red Line from September.
