Book Lovers Snap up Tickets of Emirates Literary Festival

DUBAI - Literally, they’re the hottest tickets going. With just 27 days to go, ticket sales for the Emirates Airline International Festival of Literature (EAIFL) have opened, strongly indicating excellent support from book lovers across the UAE.

Early birds are snapping them up to meet their favourite authors at the Dubai Festival City when the festival to celebrate the written word opens on February 26.

This first-of-its-kind literary festival promises to be an enriching experience and the tickets have been moderately priced between Dh35 and Dh100 for each day of the four-day celebration.

Sixty of the world’s top authors from 20 countries are expected to descend on Dubai to interact with UAE’s book lovers and join them in workshops, group discussion and book signings.

While the first three days will see UAE going to the authors, the last day will see the authors going to Dubai as they travel to city schools and colleges to promote reading and writing, by engaging with students through lectures, seminars, workshops and readings.

“I am delighted to be taking part in the inaugural Emirates Airline International Festival of Literature in Dubai. I understand that it’s the first event of its kind in the Middle East and as such it deserves the support of authors from all over the world to promote literature, and further literacy, in the region,” said Wilbur Smith who’s written 30 novels and is best known for When the Lions Feed.

“It’s very exciting for an author to be at the very first festival and this new initiative is going to be incredibly important,” says Kate Mosse who’s presented BBC 4’s flagship Readers and Writers Roadshow and is a guest presenter of Radio 4’s Saturday Review.

“It gives a chance for new readers as well as existing fans to ‘test-drive’ books and authors that they haven’t read before. The fact that Dubai is hosting this Festival and that Emirates Airline is sponsoring it, is going to make a huge contribution to reading, literacy and writing in Dubai and the whole area,” she says.

“I’m really impressed that the organisers of the Festival have made an issue of literacy by dedicating a day to it. We know that if you try and solve problems of illiteracy among children or among adults, they become the audiences of next year or the year after. ”

Special EAIFL “boarding passes” have been created for entry to the activities, taking bibliophiles on a journey of discovery and bringing them face to face with their literary idols.

“When we began approaching authors to attend the Middle East’s first literary festival we could never have dreamt of securing such an incredible collection of global literary talent,” said Isobel Abulhoul, director of EAIFL.

“We have a truly world-class international literary event covering a wide array of genres and interests coming to Dubai Festival City on the banks of the Creek in less than five weeks. The excitement and anticipation among book lovers from Dubai, the UAE and further afield, is growing enormously as the Festival nears.”

The main programme for EAIFL comprises over 50 events — debates, discussions and readings and will take place in five venues at the InterContinental Hotel, Festival City.
