Inch by Inch, Cars Crawl as Traffic Worsens

SHARJAH — Even as motorists received the good news of the Dubai-Sharjah traffic going to be eased soon with the completion of the first phase of Al Ittihad Road expansion project, motorists were in for traffic chaos on
Wednesday morning.

Hundreds of commuters from Sharjah to Dubai were stuck on the road for hours, reportedly due to the final touches being given to the construction works near Dubai Police tunnel.

RTA officials had said on Tuesday that traffic on Ittihad Road was anticipated for a few days because of the diversions and blockades arranged for the completion of the first phase by February 25.

The road blocks prompted many motorists to take Sharjah Industrial Area as an alternative route which caused a tailback for several hours in the industrial areas.

Vehicles stood still on Al Khan flyover for hours. Even at 10.30am, vehicles were seen crawling over the bridge.

Some motorists said that the diversions near Sahara Centre added to the traffic snarls in Al Nahda area.

“Traffic was horrible on Wednesday. It has been getting worse since some days in Sharjah and I think yesterday was the worst in the past three to four months. It took more than two hours for me to reach Al Nahda Park from Mega Mall area,” said Jimit Shah who works in Dubai Media City.

KM Rakesh who works in Dubai International City said he left his home on Al Khan Road at 7.45am and reached the office at 10.40am.

“I had never felt it so bad in the recent past,” he said.

Colonel Ahmed bin Darwish, Head of the Anjad patrol at Sharjah Police said that they have started deploying more police patrols on various roads, especially during the peak morning hours.

At least 20 police patrols will be stationed in the school zone alone daily from 6am till 10am to help in the flow of traffic.

The slow traffic movement on different roads in the emirate is due to various factors including construction on roads, re-opening of school for the second term and failure of drivers to abide by traffic rules
