IDEX Yields Missile and Armoured Vehicle Deals

ABU DHABI - An armoured vehicle assembly plant in Abu Dhabi and a contract for advanced fighter jet missiles have been finalised at the International Defence Exhihibition (IDEX) 2009.

The Middle East’s biggest arms fair opened in the capital on Sunday with hundreds of manufacturers displaying state-of-the-art weaponry and defence equipment.

The defence show, which was first held in 1993, was opened by UAE President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan in the presence of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

Abu Dhabi-based Hydra Trading will build the armoured vehicle factory n Abu Dhabi Industrial city (ICAD-III), Dr Mohammed Zahran, the company’s Director-General, told Khaleej Times at the exhibition. The facility will also be used to manufacture and assemble other defence products, he added.

The UAE is also purchasing 224 missiles from US contractor Raytheon Company for its F-16 fighters, said company president P.T. Mikolashek.

Raytheon announced that it had won a contract of “sizeable” value to provide the advanced version AIM-120C-7 missiles.

Also during the exhibition, France urged Iran to take part in a dialogue with Gulf Arab countries to ally their fears over its nuclear programme.

French Defence Minister Herve Morin said France wanted to play a pivotal role in the region.

“France insists that Iran plays the transparency card, cooperates internationally to make its nuclear energy programme clear,” Morin told a news conference on the sidelines of the defence show.
