Harbour System for Water Taxis

DUBAI - Visitors and commuters looking to cross Deira Creek will have a choice of as many as 6o pickup areas when a water taxi service is launched in May next year.

“These water taxi harbours will be ready in around six to seven months,” Mohammed Obeid Al Mulla, CEO of the Marine Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority, told Khaleej Times on Monday.

Each harbour will have a number system similar to the ‘Taxi Ranks’ initiative launched by the Public Transport Agency under which ranks have a designated number passengers must quote when calling for a taxi.

To use the service, people must first call the service number and then notify the name as well as the number of the harbour. “The water taxis will have the complete data and will reach the harbour for picking up the passengers,” Al Mulla said.

The water taxi service is expected to start by May 2010 with 10 boats initially. The taxis, which will have meters with a minimum fare, will have seating capacity for 11 passengers. They are being built in The Netherlands.

Many of the harbours will be built in coordination with the hotels, malls, shopping centres and resorts situated near the coastal areas. “We are also talking to many shopping malls, resorts and hotels, particularly those situated near the coastal fronts, for construction of these harbours,” Al Mulla said.

“Some among them include the Sheraton Dubai Creek, Festival City and Deira City Centre. The harbours in these places will be constructed jointly by the Agency and the establishments.”

Harbours are also planned near banks and other official establishments.

“In areas such as the Baniyas Road and Al Seef, where there are no such hotels, the Agency will come up with these harbours. In addition, there will be some large terminals in areas such as Al Gubaiba, Maritime City and Gold Souq for stationing both water taxis and the Dubai Ferry,” Al Mulla said.

Earlier, the Marine Agency officials said there were plans to introduce a route linking the Palm Islands and The World.
