ras al khaimah — Police have asked parents to be more careful with their children’s safety at home and that they should always keep a close eye on the movements of infants.

This comes after the tragic drowning of a sixteen-month Pakistani infant, Sobhan Shahed on Thursday afternoon, when he fell into a plastic water container that was kept in the bathroom at home in the old Ras Al Khaimah Corniche area.

Captain Arif Al Kaazi, who heads the team of CID city operations at the Ras Al Khaimah Police, said the child had been left in the house while playing with his young cousins when his mother and the aunt were in the kitchen preparing food.

Al Kaazi stressed that the Police was informed about the incident by Shahed’s father who reached home after his child was already dead.

According to Shahed’s father, the mother knew about the drowning of his baby when one of the children he was playing with told him that he was in the water container.

When they rushed into the bathroom they found him facing upside down with his head inside the water container.

His aunt rushed him to the hospital where the doctors pronounced the infant dead.

Al Kaazi said that it was necessary for the parents to be aware of the risks children can face at home.

“Parents should avoid leaving infants near water containers, swimming pools, extension wires, multi plugs and other hazardous materials,” Al Kaazi added.

There were several cases of children drowning in home swimming pools in Ras Al Khaimah over the recent years.

Authorities had intensified their child safety awareness campaigns which has helped in the decrease of such incidents, according to Al Kaazi.
