17 Natural Gas Stations for Vehicles

ABU DHABI - Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) is setting up 17 refuelling stations for Natural Gas for Vehicles (NGV) as part of its efforts to support the UAE government to improve the environment by developing the allied infrastructure.

According to official sources all the 17 service stations will become operational by the end of the year and out of them 10 will be in Abu Dhabi, five in Sharjah and two in Al Ain.

Among the 10 NGV refuelling stations allocated for Abu Dhabi, one has been functioning at Adnoc’s Al Maha service station on Mina Road on a test basis for quite some time.

Put together, the 17 stations will have a capacity to fill 10,000 cars per day.

The officials said the introduction of the NGV in the UAE would be unfolded in two phases.

Phase 1 is basically about starting on the infrastructure to build a sustainable NGV business.

The phase 2 programme will depend on the success of phase 1 and government decisions.

“We have started on the phase 2 planning. We are not yet looking beyond phase 2,” officials said.

Adnoc Distribution will set up a network of vehicle conversion workshops and will also encourage car dealerships to enter the conversion market.

Adnoc to set up 17 natural refuelling stations

Adnoc’s initial plan is to have three vehicle conversion centres in Abu Dhabi and one each in Sharjah and Al Ain.

Replying to questions, they said most of the NGV stations are existing Adnoc petrol stations but in the planning of the new stations space is normally allocated for NGV either at the time of construction or at a later date.

Even though all the owners of the cars with four and six cylinders in the government and private sectors can procure NGV from the refeulling stations, Adnoc Distribution is known to be specifically targeting fleet operators like taxi services. The conversion of vehicles into NGV will be optional.

The German Embassy officials here said the construction firm Bauer Kompressoren, headquartered at Munich in Bavaria in Germany, had been awarded the contract for building 250 NGV filling stations tendered by Adnoc in 2008. The proposed 17 NGV stations form part of the first phase of the project.
