Special Committees Set up to Reduce Errors in Hospitals

ABU DHABI - The rate of medical errors in UAE hospitals is not more than 1.5 per cent of the total number of cases handled but the cost of rectifying them is seven times the cost of scheduled or routine treatment, Humaid Mohammed Obaid Al Qattami, Minister of Health.

“The issue has forced the Ministry to set up committees comprising senior consultants to spot these errors at an early stage and take swift action to avoid repetition,” he said.

He said major international hospitals have medical errors at higher rates than those in the UAE.

He said he would answer a question on medical errors at Tuesday’s session of the Federal National Council, and will confirm that the rate of faults in the country’s hospitals are under control, and would reduce due to the Ministry’s strict implementation of the federal law governing medical responsibility.

“The law contains and defines all medical practices, and pinpoints precisely the kinds of medical accountability and, the plausible punishment against the offenders,” he said.

“The statute also ensures the patients of their rights for compensations in medical errors,” he said, adding that it also ensures confidentiality regarding medical information of the patients and other matters.

“The Ministry would immediately, refer doctors and officials of the hospitals, who committed the medical errors to the public prosecution, after confirming the incident,” he said.

He said the action taken would see to that such errors are not repeated, and there will be a strict guideline for doctors and others to be accurate while carrying out their duty.
