Rains Cause Flooding, More Showers Predicted

DUBAI - DUBAI and Sharjah experienced light-to-heavy early winter showers on Thursday. There was more than 20mm of rainfall in Dubai and showers are expected to continue during the weekend, according to the Met office.

With the rain came a chill to the air that might even have prompted residents to drag out a sweater as temperatures dropped to 17 degrees Celsius in Dubai with 24 as the maximum.

There were no major accidents in both the emirates and residents have been warned to avoid going to wadis and valleys as a precaution against flash floods.

As the country prepares to celebrate Eid Al Adha, pleasant weather is likely to prevail.

Rains Cause Flooding, More Showers Predicted Over the Weekend

The holiday mood of the people was on a high as the UAE experienced another round of light-to-heavy early winter showers, on Thursday.

There was more than 20mm of rainfall in Dubai and showers are expected to continue during the weekend, according to a duty forecaster.

Although December is part of the wet season, the sight of rain which is so rare in the UAE, was met with excitement by some of the residents who rushed outside to experience it.

With the rain came a chill to the air that might even have prompted residents to drag out a sweater as temperatures dropped to 17 degrees Celsius in Dubai and only reached 24 as maximum. Dubai Meteorological Office duty forecaster Clive Stevens advised: “It’s time to clean your winter wear.”

Residents were also urged not to venture into the wadis or valleys and guard against flash floods during the holidays.

Stevens added: “It’s not advisable for small boats to go out to sea or people to camp in the wadi. Residents can view the wadi from higher up but should not venture in. Showers can come up at any time this weekend.”

Some roads were water logged but police in Sharjah and Dubai reported only minor accidents. In Sharjah, 18 accidents occurred but only three caused minor injuries. In Dubai, 30 accidents occurred but no injuries were reported.

However police urged motorists to drive more carefully during the weekend. The showers were set to continue over the weekend.
