Parking Space Shortage Near St. Mary’s Church

DUBAI - Worshippers at Saint Mary’s Church in Oudh Mehta Road face problems due to the shortage in parking space around it and, the church goers are complaining against the fines imposed on them.

Due to the problem, some of the residents here have taken an alternative way by going to churches far away from where they live.

Leonardo, an Indian resident working in the real estate sector, said the police move on parking violations makes him reluctant to go to St Mary’s Church to avoid fines.

“I know many people who have stopped going to St Mary’s which is the nearest to where we live. The parking space is very limited so we can’t but park sometimes in unspecified areas. We can’t go and pray with our minds distracted. We can’t help being worried over the fines,” he said.

“I have been living in the UAE for the last 15 years. The shortage of parking is increasing day by day. They don’t provide us with enough paid parking slots,” he added.

Diana, a marketing agent from Lebanon, wondered why the police officers cannot ignore the minor violations just for one hour till the mass is over.

“We sometimes park on the pavement or in undesignated areas. The officers should be understanding and leave us to pray in peace,” Diana said.

Mary Grace from Philippines called on the police officers to be around the church and make it easier for the residents to pray.

“I think they should be around not to scare us or slap us with fines but rather to watch out for any serious violation.”

When contacted, an officer at the Raffa Police station said: “Everyone must obey the laws and rules. It is not the responsibility of the police to provide parking spaces. People must first park their vehicles in the right areas. Rules cannot be broken.”
