More Trash Fished Out From Abu Dhabi Coastline

DUBAI - Divers looking for trash and litter on the UAE’s coast line found a child’s remote-controlled helicopter, gloves and nine articles of clothing during the Clean-Up Arabia campaign in Abu Dhabi and Fujairah.

The drive, organised by the Emirates Diving Association (EDA) and the United Nations Environment Programme also held cleanups in Kuwait and Qatar.

In Abu Dhabi, there were approximately 150 volunteers, who also found 1,007 cigarettes, 995 plastic bags and 866 food wrappers along the site’s coast and in the water.

More than 300 volunteers helped in Fujairah.

Despite the success of this year’s event, the 13th annual clean up held by EDA, Ibrahim Al Zu’bi, the organisation’s environmental adviser said tactics will change next year.

“We’re going to start trying to fix the problem at the roots with more awareness campaigns,” he said.

“We are going to engage the dive centres in having at least quarterly cleanups and will be monitoring the reefs, so it’s not going to be only one big event”

A third cleanup, set to take place in Dubai, was rescheduled for Saturday because of the thunderstorms in the area.
