Many Families Prefer Celebrations at Home

DUBAI - Many expatriate families in the UAE are opting to celebrate Christmas at home this year, in view of the recession and the rising costs of Christmas brunches at hotels and restaurants across the country.

Khaleej Times caught up with a few families to ascertain their Christmas plans. British expatriate Catrin Hughes, who has been living in Dubai for the last three years with her husband Peter Duke and their two children, said, “This will be the first Christmas we shall be celebrating in Dubai. We shall be getting together for Christmas lunch at our friend’s place. But most people have already made plans and they are going to stick to it.”

Catrin said that having a Christmas lunch at hotels in Dubai has become too expensive and it would be a good idea to be at home because it basically is an occasion to spend time with family.

Jane Head, another British expatriate who has been living in the UAE for four years, will be celebrating Christmas with a few friends and family members at the MJ’s steakhouse at Madinat Jumeirah, Dubai. “I booked a table for 20 people sometime in August. Lunch at hotels has become markedly expensive.”

Jane added that if the prices were to rise further, people might stop celebrating Christmas at hotels and restaurants. Indian expatriates Kevin D’Silva and his wife Caroline and their three children, who have been in UAE for seven years, celebrate Christmas at home. “Foodstuff prices have not gone up so our Christmas cooking does not suffer,” said Kevin.
