Khalifa defers ban on old cars plying on roads

ABU DHABI - Old cars which seemed destined to go off the country roads have now been given a new lease of life at least for the time being.

The President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Sunday deferred until further notice enforcement of the ban on registration or renewal of registration of light vehicles that are 20 years old or more.

The ministerial resolution about the ban was scheduled to come into force on Monday. Announcing the presidential directive, Minister of Interior Lt-Gen. Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan said the President’s order to postpone the implementation of the ban was aimed at giving low-income owners of vehicles ample time to find adequate alternatives for the cars which would otherwise have gone off the road.

He said that the timely move by the President would give the enforcement authorities enough room to conduct further study about the criteria put forward by the National Transport Authority and other technical requirements for testing and licensing vehicles and come out with a common and comprehensive executive regulations in this regard.
