Festive Mood on a Sunny Day

DUBAI - In the bright and sunny morning on Monday, residents of the UAE offered prayers, hugged each other while exchanging greetings and sacrificed animals, celebrating Eid Al Adha with traditional fervour.

The festivities were not dampened by the financial meltdown which many thought would make families scale back on their spending. Retail markets reported brisk business.

Rulers and leaders of the country joined worshippers who thronged mosques and Eid Musallas and offered the Eid prayers. After exchanging the traditional greetings and pleasantries, they took the sacrificial animals to abattoirs to commemorate the trials and triumphs of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Special arrangements were made all over the country for slaughtering animals and distributing meat. The Eid day also was an occasion for family get-togethers and many people flocked to the parks and beaches and shared the Eid goodies and delicacies. “We cooked food at home and went to Safa Park with all family members. It was fun. Children played around and we shared the food with other people celebrating Eid,” said Mohammed Faisal, a Syrian national. Many families were seen barbecuing in parks and a large number of residents flocked to the beaches.

“The Jumeirah beach was full of people. I have never seen such a huge crowd on the beach. It was fun, anyway. Everybody was in a celebrative mood,” said Marina Joseph who celebrated Eid at the beach with her family.

Labourers celebrated in camps across the UAE cooking lunch and dinner together and serving guests.

While some labourers went to shopping malls, movie theatres, parks and beaches in groups, others visited their family members in different parts of the country to exchange Eid greetings. Most of them wore new dresses bought for the occasion.

“Friends from my village working in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah came to my room in Dubai and we cooked traditional food together. It’s great to meet everybody and share the memories of Eid days back home,” said Mohammed Anjum, a Pakistani national from Peshawar. They cooked special Peshawar kebab. “We all went to Deira to meet some friends in the afternoon. We manage to meet each other only during these special occasions,” he added.

Indian national Mohammed Yusuf said, “I miss my family especially during special occasions like this. I called my wife and children soon after I returned from the mosque. Then I cooked lunch with my roommates.”

“We went to Jumeirah beach. We are planning to watch a movie. Some of my friends from Fujairah might come in the evening to visit,” he said when this reporter met him in the afternoon.

Niyas Ali, a Pakistani worker living in Abu Dhabi who visited his friends in Al Quoz said, “I came here on Sunday to celebrate Eid with my brother and some other people from the village. I miss my family and the time we had spent together during occasions like Eid.”

He said they are going to cook some traditional food with meat in the night. “ I am happy that I could meet my friends. We went to the mosque for the prayers,” said Ali who was sporting the new kurta bought specially for Eid.
