Emirates Flight to Try Means to Reduce Carbon Footprint

DUBAI - On Monday, Emirates Airline will try out several measures aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of its inaugural flight from Dubai to San Francisco. If the company achieves the expected fuel and carbon emission savings, it will look to implementing them on other flights.

“Emirates is seeking to reduce the environmental impact of our operations wherever we can and the inaugural flight to San Francisco is a perfect example of these ambitions,” said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al-Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and group.

The plane will fly north over Russian airspace, cross the North Pole and then fly south over Canada. Most flights use an east-west path. Since 2001, Emirates has worked with the Russian Federal Air Navigation Authority to increase north-south flights. It has added 16 additional segments since then, allowing airlines to pick the best route available depending on the day’s weather.

The airplane, a Boeing 777-200LR, is designed to be more efficient. “With the introduction of our new 777 family, our 58 ultra-efficient A380s and new A350-XWBs aircraft, Emirates will operate the world’s most efficient fleet of wide-bodied aircraft,” said Al Maktoum.

According to Emirates, negotiations were necessary with government agencies in Dubai, Russia, Iceland, Canada and the United States to plot an environmentally sound flight path that takes prevailing winds and the aircraft’s weight into consideration. Emirates helped the process by operating three flights over the polar region to evaluate the route a process, which it ultimately hopes will use the Polar Routes air space. The crew will also track weather conditions and attempt to change the route to avoid unnecessarily using fuel. The US Federal Aviation Administration and San Francisco Air Traffic Control will try to offer special arrival route so the plane can achieve a continuous descent, another way of minimizing fuel use.

Emirates Airlines said it hopes to save approximately 2,000 gallons of fuel and 30,000 pounds of carbon emissions. After the inaugural flight, the thrice-weekly hauls from Dubai to San Francisco will return to normal practices until the company can determine which elements to implement.
