Emirates, Etihad Resume Flights to Bangkok Today

DUBAI - The UAE’s two major airlines, Emirates and Etihad Airways, and Thai Airways will resume flights to Bangkok today, it was announced on Thursday.

The airlines are due to resume flights after Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport reopened on Thursday evening. The stand-off between the Thai government and the protesters had forced the closure of the airport, as a result of which about 3,000 UAE residents were stranded in Bangkok and Phuket. Hundreds of them flew back on special flights, according to Thailand Consul-General in Dubai Pasan Therapak.

Therapak said about 100 UAE residents were also waiting for flights to resume to visit Thailand.

Thai Airways’ first scheduled flight was expected to arrive at 9.30pm today with the airline’s 11 flights weekly to resume on Saturday.

Emirates will resume daily flights from today but would increase to the full schedule of three flights a day on December 9. The airline has also operated two additional relief flights to clear the backlog of stranded passengers.

Richard Vaughan, Emirates Senior Vice-President Commercial Operations, East Asia and Australasia, said Emirates was presently transporting additional flight and cabin crew to Thailand in preparation for the start of normal operations.

“After conducting a comprehensive security and infrastructure review of Suvarnabhumi Airport, we have concluded that it is the right time to resume full operations to Bangkok. Our first priority remains to clear the backlog of passengers stranded in Bangkok, after which we will accept new bookings.”

The airline’s previous three recovery flights had brought back close to 800 passengers from U-Tapao and Chiang Mai airports. These included British, German, French, Italian, American and Iranian passengers, who continued their journey to Europe, North America and Middle East.

Etihad Airways will resume its twice a day flight between Abu Dhabi and Bangkok on Friday.

The airline will operate additional charter flights until December 8 from Bangkok to Abu Dhabi which will ensure Etihad can fly more than 3,000 passengers in the next three days from the Thai capital.

Etihad has already flown six special relief flights, carrying more than 2,500 travellers, from U-Tapao airport in Thailand since flights were suspended on November 26.
