Expat Algerians Vote in Presidential Election

ABU DHABI - Over 200 Algerians voted in their country’s presidential elections at the Algerian embassy in Abu Dhabi and Consulate General in Dubai till 4pm on Monday.

Algeria has granted its citizens in the UAE voting rights since 1971, when the embassy was set up.

Talking to the Algerian ambassador to the UAE, Hamid Chebira said, “Some 60 people cast their votes at the embassy and around 140 balloted at the Consulate in Dubai. The turnout will increase as the deadline for voting nears.”

Algerian expatriates here can vote until April 9, from 9am to 9pm at the embassy or consulate.

There are approximately 5,000 Algerians in the UAE and only those above 18 years of age can vote. There are 4,690 eligible voters in the UAE, of which 1,662 are in the Abu Dhabi and the rest in Dubai and northern emirates.

Hamdan Awards for Students

DUBAI - Students par excellence were awarded the prestigious Shaikh Hamdan awards at a ceremony held at Dubai International Trade Centre on Monday. The awards, initiated 11 years ago, aims to spread the culture of excellence among students in the Gulf region and throughout the Arab world.

This year, 114 students, both nationals and expatriates, selected from 312 entries at the national level, were honoured at the ceremony in addition to 19 students from the GCC and one student at the Arab level.
